Working across sculpture, installation and mixed media, Weng Io Wong examines how contemporary digital life reshapes human behaviour and emotional experience. Drawing upon the cultural heritage of her hometown of Macao, she weaves together fragmentary memories, mythology, history and architectural forms to explore the relationship between personal experience and broader cultural narratives. Wong’s practice is driven by a lifelong impulse to map the ‘everydayness of trauma’. For bodies navigating shifting geopolitical and domestic structures, she understands trauma not as a sudden, singular event but as a slow, structural friction – an invisible accumulation of micro-violence and emotional alienation. Making is, for Wong, an uncompromising process of honest self-confrontation. By examining her own history, she seeks to understand the fractures that shape the wider world. She approaches her practice first as a personal sanctuary, and secondly, as an urgent somatic infrastructure for reclaiming emotional sovereignty. Wong holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (First Class Honours) from RMIT University (2015) and an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art (2024). She was awarded the Harlow Sculpture Town Artist Residency (2024-25), the Gilbert Bayes RCA Award (2024), and the Orient Foundation Art Award (2019).
