Socially Engaged Art Practice

The Beyond the Blueprint : Reimagining the City seeks to rethink and renegotiate public spaces and cities as infrastructures of care, as well as expressions of inclusivity. The programme is a collective reimagining of urbanscapes for women and gender minorities.

“Does the Blue Sky Lie?: Testimonies of Air’s Toxicities,” is a 3 year project partially funded by The Prince Claus Fund, through which it is supporting art projects that engage with the idea of air and toxicity: its composition, movement, landscapes and scales of impact; paying special attention to its social connections.

Peripheries & Crossovers: Art As Social Practice is a multi-city socially engaged art project that aims to demonstrate art's role as an agent for change. Spanning several locations and covering diverse artistic practices, the project hopes to affect cultural shifts to counter gender-based injustice and address issues around urbanisation in India. The project treats local context(s) seriously and sensitively.

Spanning several locations and covering diverse artistic practices, the project hopes to affect cultural shifts to counter gender-based injustice and address issues around urbanisation in India. A hybrid between walking and dancing, Dancewalks embody dance as voyage. Swiss artist Foofwa d’Imobilité introduced dancewalking at KHOJ as a form of dance that always travels through space: either outdoors, dancing through several kilometers, or indoors, dance-ambulating within a closed space.

Khoj’s Networks and Neighbourhoods: Negotiating Social Ecology explored many conversations with women in Khirkee about their notions of public space. It delved into how young women from once-marginalized colonies negotiate rapid changes in their context amidst traditional family pressures even while the technologically-enabled elision of urban public and private space brings about shifts in identity and aspirations.

The Transportraits workshop was part of an international project dealing with the individual in a changing urban environment. Participants, most of whom were inhabitants of Khirkee, first learned some basic video shooting and sound recording skills and then directed their own autoportraits determining the way they wanted to represent themselves.
