Curatorial Intensive South Asia (CISA) is is an initiative of Khoj International Artists’ Association and Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan. for young curators from South Asia. It is a fully-funded fellowship programme in the field of curatorial practices relevant to South Asia in the visual arts. The program aims to develop a diversity of perspectives on the medium of the exhibition and to provide a structured and an experimental inquiry into the possibilities of curatorial practice today.

The Beyond the Blueprint : Reimagining the City seeks to rethink and renegotiate public spaces and cities as infrastructures of care, as well as expressions of inclusivity. The programme is a collective reimagining of urbanscapes for women and gender minorities.

is now being programmed at Khoj and will interrogate 'liveness' by locating the body as an ever-sensing instrument, interacting with atmospheres, architectures, technologies, interfaces and communities, mediating affect. 

The body is imagined as a barometer - a measure to understand the many lived ecosystems that fabricates the identities we embody.

For one year starting on 21 June 2022, artists, writers and researchers will undertake walks and treks in areas adjacent to the 28th North Parallel (through Mount Everest, the North Indian Himalayas, Rajasthan, and the Sindh Desert in Pakistan) and share 'weather reports' in the form of observations, stories, images and imaginings about the changing weather and our climate⁠ for Khoj's Weather Station as part of the World Weather Network - a global alliance of 28 art agencies formed in response to the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.

Given this engagement Khoj is pleased to present South Asian Visual Art Centre SAVAC's 14th edition of Monitor: Drifting with the Summer Tides, curated by Rasha Salti. MONITOR is SAVAC's longstanding experimental film and video program that holds steady engagement with an international community of artists, curators and critics, initiating dialogues around the shifting nature of politics, economies and landscapes through artists’ films.

Khoj collaborated with Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21) to curate two projects that engage with the idea of air and toxicity to be showcased on their digital platform.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21) is a leading international art and advocacy foundation created in 2002 by the philanthropist and collector Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza.

un{stacked} started off as a remote residency where Khoj supported five artistic practices that prototyped possibilities of exposing and reconfiguring centralized networked systems that are often hidden in plain sight.

The Observatory : Second Site is a collaborative multimedia essay performed online. It began as a live performance at Kaserne Basel in Switzerland and is now a web-hosted digital art project and physical exhibition.

Peripheries & Crossovers: Art As Social Practice is a multi-city socially engaged art project that aims to demonstrate art's role as an agent for change. Spanning several locations and covering diverse artistic practices, the project hopes to affect cultural shifts to counter gender-based injustice and address issues around urbanisation in India. The project treats local context(s) seriously and sensitively.

ARThinkSouthAsia is a management, policy, and research programme in the arts and culture sector. Initiated in 2010, the programme is dedicated to founding and supporting a cadre of arts managers committed to the cause of capacity building in the South Asian region, encompassing Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Along with the Khoj Support Grants, Khoj also supported two artist projects - the African Caravan web-comic by Shikhant Sablania and two issues of Renuka Rajiv’s subscription based zine Restricted Fixations. In both cases the medium of self publication becomes a site for an episodic art practice to emerge that allows for subscription based audience building.

Khoj International Artists' Association has been a primary intercontinental partner for the Live Arts Workshop (LAW) series since 2018. The Live Arts Workshop (LAW) project is a series of collaborative professional exchange workshops that harnesses the international network of Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council around the development of new work in the live arts field and new circuits for the presentation of that work. The workshop series is built on the existing works and approaches of structures active in this field in each region where Pro Helvetia is present and active, Switzerland included.

Voices from the Margins was a community arts initiative by KHOJ and Global One to One (USA), supported by World Learning (USA) as part of an ongoing global project Communities Connecting Heritage, which aimed to promote mutual appreciation of cultural heritage by creating a network of youth representatives from diverse communities who would then be able to tell their stories creatively.

The programme fostered a dialogue between artists and scientific concepts, phenomena and technology through practice.

Khirkee Residency hosted three artists, Aziz Hazara, Rajyashri Goody and Tito Aderemi-Ibitola in residence at KHOJ for four weeks, enabling them to respond to the neighbourhood of Khirkee. Their residency culminated in the Khirkee Festival- a community festival that celebrates through art the neighbourhood and the people who live in it.

The Coriolis Effect residency program was initiated to activate the social, economic and cultural relationship and historical exchange which exists between India and the African continent. Coriolis Effect not only uses the present context of 21st century migrations, but equally refers to various moments of exchange through history.

KHOJ collaborated with the Australia Council for the Arts to host artist David Brazier for a month-long residency at KHOJ studios. David Brazier researches contemporary forms of labour to inform a critical model of social engagement, exploring how participation in art can thematise the ethics and aesthetics of a deregulated global workforce.

This was an international residency partnership program for creative individuals working across various disciplines to imagine and create work that can make an impact on how we interact with the environment and each other. Through personal research, studio production time, critiques and mentoring sessions, the participants explored concerns around biodiversity, social economy, and human rights to envision emancipatory futures.

From 1997 until 2001, KHOJ conducted the International Artist Workshop mostly at Sikribagh, a quasi-colonial bungalow in Modinagar, offered for the workshop by SK Modi. The workshop functioned as an experimental art laboratory that brought together artists from all over the world to create a co-operative and non-hierarchical space, encouraging critical dialogue, exchange and the transference of information and skills.

The Khirkee Storytelling project was a participatory media art project based in Khirkee that explored the possibilities of vernacular media exchanges through the setting up of a phone recharge store.

Experience House was an exhibition that experimented with diverse mediums and modes of 'immersion'. For KHOJ, what began with explorations of Live Art, Sonic Art, Fashion, Theatre and a sustained interest in Gaming, found its pathway into 'immersion'. Through this exhibition the artists used the immediate space KHOJ occupies to create immersive environments for the audiences to dwell in and experience.

The Rockefeller Foundation invited KHOJ as a collaborator to identify and nominate exceptional artists from Asia for a month-long residency at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center in Italy. This unique collaboration enabled artists in Asia to interact with the diverse community of intellectuals at the Bellagio Centre, opening up new possibilities and opportunities for creative practitioners from the greater Asia region

KHOJ in collaboration with the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle (CCA), the Adam Mickiewicz Institute (IAM) and the Polish Institute in New Delhi initiated an exchange residency program for curators and artists from India and Poland.

The Kooshk Residency was an exchange program between Iranian artist Hoora Soleimani and Indian artist Soghra Khurasani. In the first part of the program, Khurasani had the opportunity of a residency in Tehran and collaborated with the Iranian artist. The second part was the residency for Soleimani in New Delhi where the two artists collaborated at KHOJ Studios.

This was a drawing workshop on a winter afternoon organised by KHOJ at the Khirkee Masjid to help the participants break down elements of the 14th century monument through the lenses of perspective, the play of light and shadow, texture and scale. The workshop was also an introduction to the use of charcoal in drawing for most participants.

The Mrichhakatika Project was an interdisciplinary experimental performance residency which brought together theatre director Zuleikha Chaudhary, visual artist Mithu Sen, dramaturge Kris Merken and documentary filmmaker Shilpi Gulati to work together on a performance of Sudraka's iconic Sanskrit play Mrichhakatika (The Little Clay Cart).

Khoj offered its 16 years of archive as inspiration for producing new games and toward contributing to the creative and cultural importance of computer games.

It delved into how young women from once-marginalized colonies negotiate rapid changes in their context amidst traditional family pressures even while the technologically-enabled elision of urban public and private space brings about shifts in identity and aspirations.

Humara Jamun Baug was part of the 'I Have A Dream project' where artists, farmers, and children from the Paradsinga village collaborated with the local Khirkee residents through different community art projects. The project was an important step in connecting the younger generation with food, soil, and farming.

Negotiating Food/ Community Urban Farming was a KHOJ project that enabled conversations about the food we consume, from seeds to waste. Events in the project included a tour of Khirkee’s sites of urban farming, a presentation on composting, an organic seed sale stall, explorations in digging, sowing, and the reaping of organic plants to talk about top soil displacement in urbanisation.

The Negotiating Routes – Ecologies of the Byways invited creative practitioners to propose site-specific and interdisciplinary projects in response to the National Highway Development Program (NHDP) which had put land acquisition on fast track and was taking legal and police action against non-performing contractors and displaced villagers and tribals alike. The projects combined research and art, while addressing the visible and invisible transformations taking place in their immediate environments. Negotiating Routes encouraged archiving of local knowledge and mythologies about various ecologies whilst also facilitating a collaborative dialogue between the artist and the local community.

KHOJ’s InContext:public.art.ecology program was initiated to create public dialogue around ecological issues through artistic projects and interventions; over two years, through its InContext residencies, KHOJ has narrowed its focus to projects and interventions dealing with food.

The Art & Fashion Residency was an international residency that examined the role of fashion in shaping everyday realities. It explored the individual and collective processes involved in identity-formation, whilst also looking at self-perception and communication through fashion. The history of fashion and its transformative role in the past and the present were also researched during the residency.

Curatorship Program 2010 was a residency program for young curators conceptualised by the India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) in collaboration with select institutions across India. This was the first in a series of projects that KHOJ undertook as the model centre to facilitate curatorial practice in the visual arts.

This was a children’s theatre workshop to learn the intricacies of expression, communication, posture and timing with the help of several games and role-playing exercises. The children were asked to observe and enact interpersonal relationships and express various feelings through theatre. The workshop culminated in a skit based on the significance of education and the desire to learn in children.

International artists David Brazier and Kelda Free initiated the Satpula Super Series in Khirkee for the youth to engage in play through a series of cricket matches. This residency focussed on bookmaking, with a strong emphasis on design in all its various aspects. The programme hoped to examine the definition of a 'book', through a process that extended the ways in which books can be created, perceived, and experienced, in terms of materiality.

The Photography Residency sought to interrogate the 'digital-ness' of photography as a medium and all that it implies by enabling creative collaborations between photographers and artists from the various sub genres of the medium in India and South Asia.

The Temple Installation project was undertaken by two artists at the Sai Baba temple, a landmark in Khirkee Village. After several discussions with the temple priest, they began working on a sculpture for the temple. The final installation was a 6 foot globe-like structure made of iron, which had 450 bells of various sizes welded onto it.

Khirkee ki Khoj were a series of community-based collaborative art projects, focused on creating accessible spaces to generate interactive dialogues with the Khirkee community. Eleven artists worked in collaboration with shopkeepers in Khirkee to develop a collective method of art-making.
