International Workshop Pune 2015

From 1997 until 2001, KHOJ conducted the International Artist Workshop mostly at Sikribagh, a quasi-colonial bungalow in Modinagar, offered for the workshop by SK Modi. The workshop functioned as an experimental art laboratory that brought together artists from all over the world to create a co-operative and non-hierarchical space, encouraging critical dialogue, exchange and the transference of information and skills.

About this edition

KHOJ International Artists’ Association and The Good Artist of Pune collaborated to create REFRACTING ROOMS, the 2015 edition of the itinerant KHOJ International Workshop.

KHOJ started  in 1997 through an international workshop in Delhi and, after the initial years, started travelling to new cities across the country with the international workshop model. Its aim was to provide a catalyst for the local art scene in these centres. In 2015, the workshop was held in Pune. Despite the tremendous growth Pune has experienced in the last two decades, it is still a place where a rich past meets a bustling and vibrant present. The workshop had 20 participating artists, half of whom were from different parts of the world and various parts of India. The workshop was open ended and seen as a non-hierarchical space where all artists could work together in a spirit of camaraderie and learning.

An Open Studio Day was held at the end of the 2 weeks, for local audiences to interact with the artists and the work.

This workshop was hosted at the  Working Studios run by TIFA which was an old colonial hotel (Hotel Wellesley) in the city centre near the railway station. 10 national and 10 international multi-disciplinary artists came together to explore, experiment, and create site-specific art work for 15 days.
