International Workshop Modinagar 1998

From 1997 until 2001, KHOJ conducted the International Artist Workshop mostly at Sikribagh, a quasi-colonial bungalow in Modinagar, offered for the workshop by SK Modi. The workshop functioned as an experimental art laboratory that brought together artists from all over the world to create a co-operative and non-hierarchical space, encouraging critical dialogue, exchange and the transference of information and skills.

About this edition

The second KHOJ workshop in 1998 was, as the one before, dynamic, liberating, and new. In an attempt to widen the artists’ network that had been established, we looked further afield and invited artists from Japan, Singapore and Israel, and continued our alliance with artists from Africa and the West Indies. Sparked by an intention to continue a conversation with our neighbours, we also had artists from Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

22 artists from different locations set out to reinvent definite art systems and processes, providing a structure in which the artist would be free to orient, probe and act. The workshop was conducted in Sikribagh, Modinagar- venue of KHOJ 1997 workshop. In the vast premises of the location, the artists shared their experiences, culture, and values, learning from and influencing each other to create a vibrant energy in the process. The regeneration of materials both in the making and dismantling gave a fleeting permanence to the works; with a few exceptions, most artworks left tangible traces of their presence.
