28th Parallel North - An Expeditionary Weather Station

For one year starting on 21 June 2022, artists, writers and researchers will undertake walks and treks in areas adjacent to the 28th North Parallel (through Mount Everest, the North Indian Himalayas, Rajasthan, and the Sindh Desert in Pakistan) and share 'weather reports' in the form of observations, stories, images and imaginings about the changing weather and our climate for Khoj's Weather Station as part of the World Weather Network - a global alliance of 28 art agencies formed in response to the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.

About this programme

Formed in response to the climate emergency, the World Weather Network is a constellation of weather stations set up by 28 arts agencies around the world and an invitation to look, listen, learn, and act.

For Khoj’s Weather Station, artists and researchers Shahana Rajani and Zahra Malkani, Atul Bhalla, Mithu Sen and Raqs Media Collective are undertaking walks and treks in areas adjacent to the 28th Parallel (through Mount Everest, the North Indian Himalayas, Rajasthan, and the Singh Desert in Pakistan) and share ‘weather reports in the form of observations, stories, images and imaginings about the changing weather and our climate.

Through poetry and sketches, immersive sound and video pieces, podcasts and interviews with the people they encounter on their journey, the artists will together generate seasonal long-form weather report that counter-maps the terrain with localised, embodied experience and knowledge and underscores that wind, water and weather travel across borders and transcend geographies.

Commissioned by Khoj International Artists’ Association. Khoj’s participation in World Weather Network is supported by the British Council’s Creative Commissions for Climate Action, a global programme exploring climate change through art, science and digital technology.
