ARThink South Asia 2010

ARThinkSouthAsia is a management, policy, and research programme in the arts and culture sector. Initiated in 2010, the programme is dedicated to founding and supporting a cadre of arts managers committed to the cause of capacity building in the South Asian region, encompassing Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

About this edition

The maiden edition brought together fifteen pioneering cultural practitioners and arts managers from the Indian cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Pune, Bengaluru, as well as from Thimpu in Bhutan, Kabul in Afghanistan, and Moratuwa in Sri Lanka. In accordance with ARThinkSouthAsia’s imaginative vision that is geared towards capacity-building, these Fellows were trained by experts in the essential managerial skills of fundraising, digital marketing, human resources, and strategic planning. This meeting of participants from a wide array of socio-cultural milieux resulted in a rich coalescence of various creative and professional interests. A few of the subjects that have been taken up by the 2010-11 Fellows for exploration in their work are: visual archives of contemporary art in North East India; the intersections between arts education and structural empowerment in the development sector; the evolving relationship(s) between art, activism, and technology; the creative exchanges between community art practice and urban planning; the burgeoning landscape for arts journals and periodicals in South Asia; creative engagements with conservationist projects in Japan; the shape-shifting nexus between schizophrenia and capitalism; and the various cultural manifestations of festivals and seasons in India.
