Deadline for applications: 11:59pm (EST), 21 January 2016.

The Inlaks Foundation and Skowhegan have an on-going partnership to offer a fully funded two-month (9- week) residency for an artist based in India to come to the US. The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation was established by Indoo Shivdasani in 1976 as a permanent platform for his philanthropic activities. The Foundation focuses on providing scholarships, grants and awards in any field to outstanding young Indians to develop their professional, scientific, artistic and cultural abilities.

The residency comprises:

– accommodation at Skowhegan, including housing and all meals.

– a materials stipend

– a private studio at Skowhegan
– visits with Resident Artist Faculty and one Visiting Faculty member
– administrative support from Skowhegan.

Skowhegan, an intensive nine-week summer residency program for emerging visual artists established in 1946, seeks each year to bring together a gifted and diverse group of individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to art-making and inquiry to create the most stimulating and rigorous environment possible for a concentrated period of artistic creation, interaction and growth.
The fellowship is open to emerging artists under the age of 35 based in India. The selected artist should be in a strong position to make an enthusiastic, discursive and speculative engagement within the studio environment and with the diverse community of artists on campus.

The residency will take place from June 11-August 13, 2016. Absences of any kind or length are not permitted.

Selection and eligibility
The residency is open to contemporary artists working in all disciplines. Skowhegan’s program is unique in its function as both a school and a residency program. Artists in residence are offered the opportunity for concentrated studio time supported by a discursive community of faculty and staff to offer critical feedback and an opportunity for growth and experimentation within a studio practice. Participants are encouraged to come prepared to work without a preconceived agenda or schedule. All participants, Faculty, and staff live and work on campus and are provided with studio space and technical support for their work. The artistic dialogue continues around the clock.

Applying artists should have a good level of spoken English, and should feel comfortable engaging in artistic discussions in English.

Participants for the 2016 program are selected on the basis of work only (still images or video) by Skowhegan’s Board of Governors (all distinguished artists) and Resident Faculty for the summer. All applicants will be notified by April 10, 2016.
