Open Call for Emerging Curators
The Instituto Tamaulipeco para la Cultura y las Artes (ITCA) of the Government of the State of Tamaulipas, in collaboration with the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes of Mexico, calls on emerging visual artists and curators, both Mexican and foreign, to participate in the Biennial of the Frontiers (Bienal de las Fronteras).
Among its goals, the Biennial aims to build a platform for emerging artists and curators to develop creative and innovative proposals in the field of the visual arts.
The members of the Selection Committee of the Biennial include visual artist and architect María del Carmen Aguirre Treviño (Mexico), independent curator and journalist Leonor Amarante (Brazil), art historian and curator Julia P. Herzberg (USA), chief curator of the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Guillermo Santamarina (Mexico), and Emiliano Valdés, chief curator of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín, (Colombia).
Through its Acquisition Program, the Biennial of the Frontiers will fund prizes and build a collection comprised of the most relevant artworks and curatorial projects presented to benefit the Instituto Tamaulipeco para la Cultura y las Artes (ITCA) in Tamaulipas, Mexico.
The Biennial will be held at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Tamaulipas (MACT) and has the valuable support of institutions such as the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil in Mexico City, and the education departments of the Guggenheim Museum and El Museo del Barrio, both in New York.
Through these two latter institutions, the Biennial of the Frontiers will offer a workshop for emerging curators preselected for the Biennial, who will participate alongside internationally recognized art professionals and intellectuals in the presentation and discussion of their proposals.
Workshop instructors and coordinators are Rocío Aranda Alvarado (El Museo del Barrio / The S Files Biennial, Curator), Othón Castañeda (Bienal de las Fronteras, Executive Director & Chief Curator), Carmen Ferreyra (Bienal de las Fronteras, Special Projects Director), Pablo León de la Barra (Guggenheim Museum, Curator), Omar López-Chahoud (Bienal de Nicaragua, América Latina y el Caribe, Puerto Rico, Curator), Harper Montgomery (Hunter College, Programming Coordinator), Julia P.
