India Residency

Hosting emerging artists from India in Montreal makes a real difference in their career as many of them are rarely offered the opportunity to leave their country. The Darling Foundry provides artists with optimal professional and living conditions to foster their artistic research and a cultural immersion in a North American context. Launched in 2012 by Fonderie Darling in partnership with the Inlaks Shivdasani foundation and What About Art? art organization in Mumbaï, the India Residency has generated many professional contacts with other art organizations leading to exhibitions of former residents in Montreal, Laval and Rouyn-Noranda. The impact on the Montreal community is also meaningful as this program brings artistic practices that are underrepresented.

Lodged for 2 months in the studio building of the former industrial complex of the Fonderie Darling, residents are provided with a live-in studio of approximately 60m2, equipped with a kitchen corner. They have access to communal spaces shared with the other artists at Fonderie Darling: a big kitchen, laundry facilities, bath and shower rooms, living-room, production studios (for wood, metal, CNC-cutting and ceramics). The networking program set up by the team of the Darling Foundry facilitates interactions between the residents and the art professionals in Montreal, while the close vicinity of the 9 Montreal-based artists who have a studio in the building contributes to a smooth inclusion into the Montreal art scene.

Thanks to a partnership with the South Asian Visual Arts Centre (SAVAC), a one-week research trip is offered in Toronto, further fostering professional and artistic encounters and exchanges.

Candidates must submit their application no later than March 24, 2020.
