Bijoy Jain was born in Mumbai, India in 1965. He studied in the United States and gained his master’s degree in architecture at Washington University in St. Louis in 1990. He worked in Los Angeles and London and then spent some time traveling before returning to live and work in Mumbai. Studio Mumbai was formed under his direction. The studio’s pursuit is to use the Indian landscape as a resource; to create spaces formed by local climatic conditions, materials and technologies and an ingenuity arising from limited resources. In the patient evolution of projects the practice has developed a hybrid approach by combining Indian notions about the nature of living with ideas of both contemporary culture and ecology.
