Cao Fei is one of the most influential figures from the generation of Chinese artists that emerged on the global scene in the last decade. Her work vividly reflects the changes in image production, lifestyle, culture, and identity in relation to globalization. Inspired by specific forms of Asian pop culture and new technology, Fei’s large body of work covers a wide variety of media–from performance, photography, video, and installation, to the internet, social engagement, and activism. By collapsing the extremely mundane and the fantastical into one, the artist attempts to vividly underscore the interior and exterior worlds of global, digital citizens navigating extreme change.
