Bio

Maithili Bavkar is an artist from Bombay, currently based in New Delhi, working with text across various mediums like artist books, poetry, photography, and video. She is particularly interested in the multiple lives of text, as the written, spoken, scribbled, printed, patented, coded, repeated or recycled word, and how meaning shifts as it moves between forms. In her practice, she attempts to unsettle the ordinariness of the everyday and examine the space between natural ‘as existing’ and ‘as constructed’. Her recent research explores the relationship between memory and technology, particularly the ways in which memory is externalized, and how technology intersects with processes of remembering, forgetting and archiving.

She holds an MA in Visual Arts from Ambedkar University, Delhi and has been a Curatorial Fellow at the Student Biennale, Kochi Biennale Foundation in 2022. Recent exhibitions include Into the Midst, by Studio CAMP, Bombay (2024–25) ; Democracy – The Endangered Bird, Act I, at Art Zita House, Stockholm, Sweden (2023) and collective group exhibitions by The Crown Letter Project at Institut français de Prague (2023); Bienalsur, Argentina (2021) and Fondation Fiminco, Paris (2021). Her artist books have been displayed at BOOK SHOW-I (2024–25) by Priyesh Gothwal at West Space Bookshelf, Melbourne; The Foundation for Contemporary Art, FICA Reading Room, Delhi; Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida; Kota Art Gallery, Rajasthan; W.I.P. alt fest, Bangalore; W.I.P. alt fest, Delhi and TEXTXET (2023) at The Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (FICA) New Delhi.
