Rasel Chowdhury’s primarily photographic practice is defined by documenting his home of Bangladesh. Driven by a desire to use the camera as a form of storytelling, his work often addresses the environmental issues and changing landscapes particular to the country.
Through various projects, Chowdhury has dealt with the death of a river in Buriganga (Desperate Urbanization), a dying city Sonargaon (Before the End), and Railway Longing which depicts the newly transformed spaces around the Bangladesh railway to explore the change in the environment, unplanned urban structures and the formation of new landscapes.
Rasel graduated in photography from Pathshala, South Asian Media Institute. Recent exhibitions include Dhaka Art Summit, Bangladesh, 2016; Syngenta Photography Award Exhibition, London, 2015; and Singapore Photo Festival, Singapore, 2014. He has attended workshops in several countries and published his work in both national and international newspapers. He has been exhibited in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Dubai, France, India, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore, UK and America.
He has undertaken a residency at Villa Perochon, France, (2013) and in addition to the Samdani Art Award, has won awards including Syngenta Award 2015, Getty Image Emerging Talent Award 2012, Ian Parry Scholarship Award 2011 and Magnum Expression Photography Award, (Finalist) 2010.
