Ritwika Ganguly

Bio
Ritwika Ganguly is an artist from Kolkata, currently based in Baroda. Her bachelor’s from Kala Bhavana (2018-22) and master’s from Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Baroda (2022-24) are both in painting and she is keenly interested in moving images, cinema and theatre as well. Her practice involves sketching, photo and video-documenting and translating them into watercolour wash paintings and traditional animation.
Ritwika’s works reflect her experiences of people, places and the time she dwells in. Through this, she explores the way of seeing and perceiving the human mind, its association with matter and the complexity of socio-cultural conditioning in the context of visual symbols and their existence in time and space. Ritwika aims to bring these symbols out of their quotidian context and allow their simplest, negligible existence to approach people in their own way.
She tends to recognise the importance of ignorable innocuous moments, quite spontaneously and goes towards working on them in a time-consuming process to be still with the fleeting part of an unknown narration. Ritwika has been participating in exhibitions in India and abroad, including the Kochi-Muziris Students’ Biennale (2022), Anant Art, Delhi and Apre Art House, Mumbai, as well as the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Lasalle College of Arts, Singapore. She also participated in short residency programmes with Kala Sakshi, Delhi and Tropical Lab 18, Singapore. Ritwika’s interest in animation has also earned her an opportunity to work in collaboration with the eminent animation filmmaker Prakash Moorthy.
