Soumen Mondal was born and raised in the Sundarbans. The low-lying deltas with mangroves and meandering streams have had early influences on Soumen’s practice. In his work, Soumen captures the uncertainties of time – the exploration of a landscape that is increasingly prone to coastal erosion and climate change, and the effects these events have on the community. He works with materials like cloth, leaves and shrubs and tissue paper. His work is layered as are his narrations of the transitory description of life and nature which is the essence of the natural beauty of Sundarbans which is always unpredictable.
