Mithu Sen’s work ‘I am a poet’, is an interesting point of departure from not only the traditional expectations of a poet-author figure but also of poetry itself. Playing with a host of forms that lie between live performance, recorded sound and printed text; Sen is able to glide across the poetic form almost naturally. Further, in implicating a live audience and moving towards an interactive mode, the work creates multiple authors who exist and compose alongside each other, finally leaving behind a forest of traces and movements. The issue of language and silence is also significant in the work as the idea of legibility is linked to language through the act of reading aloud printed text of an unformulated script thereby creating a space for the unintelligible aural, within the structures of language.
