KHOJ International Artists’ Association and CMYK Bookstore presented an evening with Virginia Whiles, author of Art and Polemic in Pakistan: Cultural Politics and Tradition in Contemporary Miniature Painting.

This talk traced a fascinating journey exploring the tradition of miniature painting, and the efforts of contemporary artists in Pakistan in the recent decades to revive and reinvent this traditional art form, which had faded under the colonial influence of the British and is now gaining ground.

Virginia gave a short presentation followed by an open Q&A session.

Virginia Whiles is Associate Lecturer at Chelsea College of Art, University of the Arts, London. She gained her PhD in Social Anthropology at the School of Oriental and Asian Studies, University of London. Virginia Whiles has previously curated Manoeuvering Miniatures– a highly coded and deeply provocative exhibition on contemporary miniature paintings from Pakistan, for KHOJ in 2001.
