Khoj hosted an interactive workshop with Dr Gowdham Prabhakar from 5pm – 6:30pm on 12th December, 2024 at Khoj Studios.
This workshop delved into the foundational principles of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) that drive the creation of innovative interfaces and user experiences across a range of domains. The first half of the session explored multimodal interaction approaches that enhance user engagement in fields such as AI, robotics, music, AR/VR/XR, and new media. Through this lens, Dr Prabhakar introduced HIVE’s latest projects, including HUX (HeadsUp eXperience) AI, a multimodal music interface, XR applications designed to improve accessibility, and New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME). These projects illustrated how thoughtfully crafted interactions can push the boundaries of technology and expand the expressive potential of new media.
The second half of the session focused on HIVE’s ongoing work in Human-Robot Interaction, specifically targeting the design and development of a search-and-rescue robot aimed at post-disaster operations. This project addressed unique challenges in robotics, integrating complex HCI principles to enhance usability and effectiveness in high-stakes environments. Following the discussion, attendees experienced a selection of interactive art installations that demonstrated HCI principles firsthand, providing a hands-on opportunity to explore the diverse applications of cutting-edge interaction design.
Dr. Gowdham Prabhakar received a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) from IISc Bangalore. He completed his Postdoc at Multi-Sensory Devices Group, University College London (UCL). Currently, he is an Assistant Professor at IIT Kanpur and supervises the Harmony, Interaction, Versatile Exploration (HIVE) Lab. His industry linkage extends to his role as an Associate Research Engineer at S.L.Kirloskar groups and spearheading projects at France-based Faurecia on gaze-controlled Heads-Up Display (HUD) and cognitive load estimation for drivers in the automotive industry. Much of his work delves into human-computer interaction, robotics, music technology, and new media. He is passionate about blending his love for technology and music and is keen on opportunities in HCI and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) for multisensory immersive experience in Extended Reality (XR) with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
