The narrow staircase of Chaudhuri Bari, moving down in almost a spiral movement, was an exciting site for me. It felt like a metaphor for “exploring the deep” in search of the history, the myths and legends generally associated with the colonial feudal structure. My usual practice involves digging up sites, in the manner of excavations. Here too, I have projected the site especially through the staircase in the form of an archaeological site being excavated in search of a “reality”. Therefore, this staircase exists as a passage to connect the present to the past, or the real to the mythical.
