Spilt Milk: Tracing Imperial
Tears …
Spilt Milk: Tracing Imperial Tears … continues my exploration of identity issues from a post-colonial feminist perspective. Previously, my work has focused on female Creole identity in the post-colonial Caribbean. There, I have worked with museum artefacts and historical archives to uncover the “silenced” voices of the past, namely, those of women oppressed by a history of patriarchy and colonialism. In particular, I have tried to suggest a shared bond between black and white women within the domestic space during plantation slavery owing to the fact that they often shared the body of the white master. As a country of the Old World, India’s history differs greatly from the post-colonial spaces in the New World where societies were completely changed/recreated by colonialism rather than re-shaped as in India. This work attempts to address aspects of colonial India’s history from a female perspective.
