Trespassing is Strictly Prohibited
This work, later renamed Grey Town/ Chaudhuri Bari, is
an interactive performance-installation in which I play the character of a Hindu woman, influenced by Western liberal ideals, who attempts to illegally claim a share of her adopted family’s property. The performance lasted several days and metaphorically raised micro and macro questions related to rights to property claim. I was trying to claim the property illegally by showing forged evidence. But for me, it also posed questions of rehabilitation, displacement, and claim in the current global situation.
This work had many facets:
- A performance which resembled a boxing ring, where
- a fight started like a domestic tiff and ended in a multinational conflict. Both the participating artists and the audience became part of the fight.
- I dressed as an Indian Hindu lady influenced by the Europeans.
- I had myself photographed and then manipulated the photographs.
- I faked documents to claim the property. I succeeded in claiming it by placing reconstructed memorabilia at different locations on the property.
