Pushpamala presented a series of photographs of the archetypal Indian housewife and juxtaposed them with her fantasy role of ‘a lady in a golden frock’ – stylish, dangerous and desirable. The work commented on the· sociopolitical straitjackets and the ambiguities of female myth and fantasy in popular culture. There was a sense of ‘B’ movies in the photos and for the wise and uninitiated she arranged a visit to the local cinema. Dressing for shoots became a daily ritual.
