Uma Ray
Bio
Uma Ray born in Jamshedpur, is a visual artist based in Kolkata. She completed her BVA at Rabindra Bharati University specializing in Sculpture in 2004 before receiving an MFA in Sculpture from Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan in 2006. She has worked with Experimenter, Kolkata since 2013-2022 as a Gallery Manager and Exhibitions Head. Her roles involved designing and production of exhibitions, artist liaison and coordination and overseeing overall management of the organisation and its programming over the years.She is a Associate member and Curator at Unbound Studio, a multi-disciplinary platform started in 2012 between Pune and Kolkata.
She is presently working as a independent arts administrator, facilitating and enabling artists by offering operational and administrative solutions to realizing their goals. She believes in knowledge sharing rooted in exchanges and dialogues and creating equal opportunities. Amongst her curatorial ventures have been Continuum, a three way exchange of video programme between Unbound Studios, Van Lagos, Nigeria and Where Dreams Cross, Sweden. And, initiating an expansive series of lectures on Bio Art by visiting curator Mireille Bourgeois, Canada. Her own practice involves working in, but not limited to various media – drawings, video, photography, sculpture, installations and music, exploring the expressive tactility of material in their most un-tampered state through her work. Current socio – political uncertainties – that lead to introspection and self-examination, and enquiry of one’s identity and the social positioning of the self at such times – pique her interest. She is one of the members of Urban Dialogues, a community of artists spread across the world only having met virtually to connect through ideas and collaborations and meaningful exchanges. Ray has had shows at Alcobaça, Portugal, STIFTELSEN 3,14 – International Contemporary Art Foundation; Sazmanab Platform for Contemporary Arts, Peanut Underground Art Projects, NY; Mori + Stein Gallery London, Arnot Art Museum, New York; Belgrade Art Fair, Formverk Art Space in Sweden, Casoria Contemporary Art Museum, Naples; National Museum of Singapore; Goethe Institute, Alexandria (Egypt) amongst other places.
