About this edition

Towards an Alternative Museum was a stimulating printmaking workshop for children from the Khirkee community, offering a hands-on introduction to serigraphy, storytelling, and visual experimentation. Led by artist and former Khoj Peers resident Sujay Mukherjee, the workshop unfolded over six days, blending drawing, design, and archival exploration into a playful and structured process of creative discovery.

The children were introduced to the basics of screen printing through a series of collaborative exercises—beginning with surrealist games like the exquisite corpse, and gradually moving toward more technical aspects such as image exposure, inking, and printing on various surfaces, including paper, fabric, and walls of the building. Along the way, they brought in objects from home, shared personal stories, and constructed a collective character, Inspector Chewing Gum, a curious figure on a mission to track down missing items hidden throughout the building.

As the workshop progressed, test prints became a canvas for reinterpretation. A single abstract shape took on many lives: a dolphin, a pirate ship, a castle, a telephone. Through this process, the children experimented not just with form, but with imagination and perspective.

The week concluded with an open sharing where families were invited to see the work and witness the storytelling in action. The children collectively designed the studio space with their prints, their experiments, even the exposed screens into an exhibition. The week had become as much about their personal stories as the techniques of serigraphy, turning Khoj into a museum of their making.
