KHOJ presented Level 01, an exhibition of Art Games made by resident artists of the Of Games residencies between 2013 and 2015. The first exhibition of experimental Art Games in the country, Level 01 showcased games made by Indian artists from diverse backgrounds — architecture, visual arts, literature, film-making and game development — taking part in the global conversation on independent game development and Art Games.

KHOJ‘s interest in games and gaming emerged from an involvement in new media and technological practice within contemporary art. Game development as a form of contemporary art practice took shape over the course of the last two decades with growing worldwide interest in Art Games, games that could give players transformative experiences beyond traditional game objectives such as victory points and level-ups. Showcasing seven Art Games made by Indian artists, KHOJ carried forward the global conversation on Art Games from a subcontinental perspective. In the contemporary world, games have become ubiquitous cultural phenomena, used primarily as tools of recreation and increasingly finding new definitions as tools of learning, advocacy and cultural critique. KHOJ believes in the gaming experience as an experience of art and, to that end, created a unique exhibition of experimental Art Games embedded within a larger game, redefining contemporary art practice, game development and exhibition spaces.
